Background
The party was created with the participation of the leader of the Democratic Party of Russia and the Center for Political Technologies, Andrei Bogdanov, which was announced on July 18, 2012 at a joint press conference "the Coordinating Council - a cross-party meeting."

This association was also created by the initiative of Andrei Bogdanov. It includes Townspeople Union, Social Democratic Party of Russia, People's Party of Russia, the Democratic Party of Russia and the Communist Party of Social Justice. It is also known that the CPSU program was written by a former deputy chairman of the DPR, now current chairman of the Townspeople Union, Vyacheslav Smirnov.

2012
On October 14, 2012 the party participated in the regional elections, but failed to win a single mandate.

According to the results of the regional elections, the Communist Party obtained the following result:
Krasnodar region - 26 704 (1.59%) votes;
Saratov region - 6140 (0.66%) votes;
Sakhalin Region 3286 (3.04%) votes;
North Ossetia 2718 (1.18%) votes
In Kaliningrad, the party participated in the elections for mayor, its candidate Dmitry Kochergin scored 289 (0.39%) votes.

2013
September 8, 2013 in the regional elections in Volgograd, the party received 5.04 % (9055 votes), overcoming the five percent barrier, winning a seat in the Volgograd City Council, which releases the party from the obligation to collect of signatures for the participation in regional and federal elections.

According to the results of the regional elections, the Communist Party obtained the following results:
Republic of Buryatia - the election of the People's Khural of the Republic of Buryatia - 3.68% of the votes;
Republic of Kalmykia - the election of the People's Khural (Parliament) of the Republic of Kalmykia - 1.36% of the votes;
The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) - the election of the State Assembly (Il Tumen) of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) - 1.92% of the votes;
Chechen Republic - Parliament elections of the Chechen Republic - 0.03% of the votes;
Trans-Baikal Krai - the elections to the Trans-Baikal Krai Legislative Assembly - 3.06 % of the votes;
Arkhangelsk Region - the elections to Arkhangelsk Regional Council of Deputies - 1.12 % of the votes;
Vladimir Region - the elections to The Legislative Assembly of Vladimir Region - 3.75 % of the votes;
Ivanovo region - the election to the Ivanovo Regional Parliament - 1.8 5% of the votes;
Irkutsk region - the elections to the Legislative Assembly of the Irkutsk region - 3.26% of the votes;
Kemerovo region - the election to the Council of People's Deputies of the Kemerovo region - 0.27% of the votes;
Rostov region - the elections to the Legislative Assembly of the Rostov region - 1.45% of the votes;
Smolensk region - elections in Smolensk Regional Parliament - 2.54% of the votes;
Ulyanovsk region - the elections to the Legislative Assembly of the Ulyanovsk region - 2.46% of the votes;
Yaroslavl region - elections in Yaroslavl Regional Parliament - 1.01% of the votes;
The candidate of the Communist Party, retired Anchugin Boris Alexandrovich, 
received 1.77% of votes at the Vladimir Region Governor elections.

The female candidate from the CPSU party has been withdrawn from the election to the Arkhangelsk Regional Assembly, since it turned out that she had died four months before the nomination.

2014 - 2016
In 2014, the party was headed by Andrey Bogdanov, who succeeded Yuri Morozov; first secretary of the central committee of the party was elected Andrei Brezhnev - the grandson of General Secretary of the CPSU Leonid Brezhnev, who led the party list in the elections, which resulted in the party in the State Assembly of the Republic of Mari El of the 6th convocation gaining 2.21% (5085 votes), in the Republic of Crimea gaining 0.84% (6199 votes), in the Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol gaining 0.53% (886 votes) therefore not entering parliament.

On December 13, 2015 under the leadership of the chairman of "Grazhdanskaya Sila" (Citizen Power) party, Oleg Sidorov, and the chairman of the Communist Party, Andrei Bogdanov, the merger of the two parties under the existing name "Communist Party of Social Justice" was announced at a joint meeting of the federal political council of the party. However, on December 18, Oleg Sidorov was dismissed from his post.

The party did not participate in the elections to the State Parliament (2016). Despite the party's one seat in the Volgograd City Council, the Central Electoral Commission has not included the party to the list of the parties, that will be exempt from the collection of signatures at the elections to the State Parliament. The party did not carry out signature collection.
